Young Learners

Young Learners

The way in which students learn English as a foreign language has changed dramatically over the past few years. Emerging technologies and massive exposure to English have a huge impact on foreign language acquisition. Young learners no longer expect to listen to English in class or follow teachers’ guidelines as passive learners but rather engage themselves with productive activities in a learning environment where they feel welcome to explore English as active learners.

What is more, these factors are not alone in changing the EFL classroom. The diversity of student learning profiles and burst of creativity with which every child approaches the English language make a friendly learning environment necessary to help students respond effectively to numerous learning stimuli inside and outside the classroom.

As a matter of course, traditional standards of assessment stand in the way rather than enhance knowledge and competence of young learners. They transform the classroom into an arena where competitiveness and labelling thrive. As a result, they fail to provide students with personalised learning pathways and motivation for better learning. The million-dollar question is…

How is it possible to respond to all the challenges of the modern EFL classroom?

To this question, Mr. Alex English Language School answers by setting an example for Teaching English as a Foreign Language outside the box with:

Small Learning Groups
The younger the age, the smaller the group so as for teachers to offer TARGETED SUPPORT and address learners' specific needs. Junior Classes of Up to 5 and Teenage Classes of Up to 8 Students!

Minimum Hours of Teaching
The number of students in each class enables us to cover the syllabus corresponding to each Level of the CEFR without burdening students with long teaching hours every week.

No Transcripts! Just Feedback!
We give feedback through commentary and individualised parent meetups. It is our firm belief that positive reinforcement can do the job better than any means of assessment especially for young learners. More particularly, the younger the learner, the more we try to encourage the student and ask for parents’ assistance as a means to build-up the learner’s autonomy. On the other hand, the older the student, the more practice tests they sit. In this way, exam candidates track their progress objectively and adjust their studying at their own pace.

Above all, our goal is to create autonomous learners who will further their English education outside the limits of formal schooling throughout their lives.

English for adults

Adults

Teaching adults calls for a specialised student-centred approach for learners to achieve their target. When it comes to adults, the motive varies and so does the number of alternatives regarding the duration of a course offered or the tools utilised to respond to students’ needs. To be more specific, the entire process of teaching differentiates depending on the adult’s prior knowledge of English and the goal (e.g. English for Specific Purposes, Language Certificate, Succeed in IELTS/ TOEFL/ TOEIC). No matter the case, we opt for private lessons or customised lesson-plans that best suit an adult’s needs at the time. We also offer classes to all adults who want to brush up their skills for either personal or professional reasons, for example, a job interview or presentation in English before a committee or a non-Greek speaking audience. Students of an older age who aspire to speak English fluently and identify themselves as lifelong lovers of the English language and culture also have a dear place at our school.
